Wetland

El lodo

Set in a hostile small rural community where water is drying up and antiquated traditions clash with modern-day sensibilities, Wetland is a high-tension environmental thriller starring Raúl Arévalo (The Europeans, Marshland) and Paz Vega (also in The House of Snails).

As a severe drought punishes the vast expanses of rice fields in eastern Spain, the beautiful natural region of Laguna Blanca is named a Nature Preserve. A prestigious biologist, Ricardo (Arévalo), arrives to protect it. His family is going through tough times, but Ricardo is convinced that a change in scenery will help.

Ricardo’s mission is to hinder the abusive and illegal use that everyone makes of the lagoon. He cannot allow old-fashioned practices to prevail because of the serious damage they pose to the ecosystem. But he receives pressure and threats from the locals, who consider Ricardo a threat to their existence and their livelihood.

A must-see character-driven thriller, in Wetland Arévalo is excellent as a man dangerously trapped in a web of conspiracy and injustice.
