The Daughter

La hija

In this cleverly constructed dramatic thriller by one of Spain’s most intriguing auteurs, Manuel Martín Cuenca (Cannibal, The Motive), a pregnant teenager comes to a tense agreement with the couple sheltering her.

Irene (portrayed by breakthrough actress Irene Virgüez) is a fifteen-year-old who lives in a centre for juvenile offenders. She has just become pregnant and is determined to turn her life around, with the help of Javier (Javier Gutiérrez, Marshland), an educator at the centre.

Javier offers her to come live with him and his wife Adela (Patricia Lopez Arnaiz, While at War) in their house in a remote and rugged spot in the mountains, so she can hide and comfortably carry her pregnancy to term, with only one condition; in exchange, she agrees to give them the baby she is carrying in her womb.

Imbued with suspense and shot in the breathtaking landscape of the Andalusian mountains, this gripping film explores the limits of our rights to parenthood.
